Ryan stormed in, haphazardly throwing her keys down on the side table in the foyer of her condo. Her briefcase was discarded in the same fashion.

For the first time ever Ryan was hurt to the point of anger and she had no one to blame but herself. Everything was so clear now. Now she understood why Jocelyn wouldn’t speak to her. She wasn’t speaking to her because she had already moved on. Jocelyn found a new woman to occupy her time so it was pointless for her to worry about Ryan’s feeble explanations. She shouldn’t have been surprised. Jocelyn was a young, sexy and highly capable woman. It was no secret that women wanted her and why should she resist?

Ryan quickly made her way upstairs to change into her workout clothes. She had invested in a few pieces of workout equipment that was kept in her basement. She would often get on the treadmill and pound away until her problems seemed to diminish, or she was too exhausted to care. Now was as good a time as any. Cranking up her iPod to something loud, a brisk walk quickly accelerating to almost a full sprint. This would be perfect. The burn in her lungs and the spasms in her thigh muscles would help draw the pain away from her central muscle.

It seemed like every time Ryan got close to what she wanted it was taken away. She couldn’t remember the last thing she had gone after, besides her career, and actually gotten.

Thump, thump, thump, thump. Her legs propelled her faster as she let her frustrations fuel her steps. Every love Ryan had ever known either her mother or circumstance had taken away, her father, Brenda and now Jocelyn.

Do I love Jocelyn? She imagined those words chasing her on the treadmill. Ryan had no answer to that question and it mattered little now that she didn’t even have the comfort of the woman’s friendship anymore. Sweat poured off her body as she passed the five mile maker on the digital display.

Thump, thump, thump, thump. She couldn’t even blame her mother for this one. Her fear and lies of omission put her in this predicament. Maybe subconsciously she wanted to push Jocelyn away. Ryan knew she could never be with Jocelyn, she could never leave Reed and she certainly couldn’t tell her mother that yet another woman had stolen her heart. To add to the ever-growing pyramid of reasons why Ryan couldn’t be with Jocelyn, she threw the non-fraternization clause within their contracts on the top. The pile swayed, but didn’t crumble. It seemed that the odds were stacked against her personally and professionally.

Thump, thump, thump, thump. Faster Ryan pushed as thoughts of her mother flooded her mind. It baffled her to think how much she resented someone she loved. And she knew she loved her mother. Despite Maureen Fishers shortcomings, she had been a good mother, probably better in her own mind then she actually was, but certainly not the worst.
